Course textbooks and other required and recommended readings

More than ever, Christians need to be grounded in a systematic understanding of scripture. This classic text, by Louis Berkhof is a concise introduction to the systematized body of Christian doctrine that is presented in clear and simple language  to enable modern readers to comprehend and apply its teachings. It includes review questions for further study at the end of each chapter.

The Westminster Confession of Faith has, for hundreds of years, served as the doctrinal foundation of the Reformed churches. This exposition, a standard in the field, was written to aid the church in recovering with certainty the rich heritage of the Reformation faith.

OLD TESTAMENT POETICAL BOOKS OT Poetical Books

Course Description

This is a study of the form and content of the poetical books of the Old Testament, including Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations. The nature of Hebrew poetry will be considered, as well as the distinctive function of these books in the life of Israel and the church today. Consideration will be given to the proper method of interpreting these books, as well as the manner in which they provide a distinctive insight into the fullness of grace as it is found in Jesus the Christ.

Course Objectives

Through this course, the student should be able to: (1) analyze the various types of poetic literature that are found in the Old Testament; (2) recognize the distinctives of the negatively critical treatment of the poetical books; (3) apply the messages of these books to the life of the church today; (3) determine how the poetic material of the Old Testament relates specifically to the messianic expectations of God's people.

Required and recommended readings

How do we walk in the way of wisdom? How should we respond to suffering? How can we cope with life’s frustrations and sorrows? How ought we to weep? How ought we to love?

The answers can be found in the great “how-to” books of Scripture—the Old Testament’s wisdom literature—but unfortunately, these books are frequently overlooked in biblical theology, despite their immense significance for God’s people. In this book, O. Palmer Robertson introduces the concept of biblical wisdom before providing a redemptive-historical analysis of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations. These neglected books offer the contemporary reader inspired insight (and a solid dose of godly realism) into every major realm of human existence: from love and intimacy to grief and calamity.

For centuries the book of Psalms has been read as a random collection of poems with no intentional arrangement. But is this a correct understanding?

O. Palmer Robertson equips us to see a clear redemptive-historical progression that develops across the five books of Psalms. With the aid of charts in full color, he demonstrates how an intentional structure is indicated by elements such as the placement of acrostic psalms, strategic couplings of Messianic psalms with Torah psalms, and the grouping of psalms by topics.

If you love the psalms, Robertson will give you a better grasp of the whole Psalter and a deeper appreciation of each individual poem.
