COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will briefly trace the development of culture from the early seventeenth century to the modern period.  The focus will be integrated, including history, philosophy, literature, and art forms of each era.  Worldviews of each culture will receive special attention.  Prerequisite: World History 1.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will trace the development and significance of major cultures and historical periods. The growth of ancient China and India, with emphasis on major movements in culture, religion, and philosophy. The New World to 1492. Europe and the world economy. Two political models--absolutism and limited power. Changes in Africa and Asia. Independence develops in the Americas. New ideas and their consequences. State development in the modern age. Western politics and diplomatic failure in Asia. World War I and its aftermath (“losing the peace”). Emerging national movements, dictators, and democratic weakness. World War II. The Cold War and the Global Economy. The non-Western world today.
