In Luganda, we have a saying, “ensowera ekwagala ye kuggwa ku bbwa”, which means, “The fly that loves you is the one which falls on your wound” (direct translation). When such a fly falls on your wound, it reminds you that you need to treat it, or else it will kill you.

The fly, which does not love you, will keep a distance from you, but when the wound eventually kills you, it will invite all its friends to sing and dance over your corpse!

It is usually difficult for us to know our weaknesses, if no one points them out to us, they may ruin our physical and/or spiritual lives. Such weaknesses may lead to broken relationships and loss of friends. Therefore, we need to appreciate people who point out our weakness to us; it means they truly love us, and they do not want our lives to be ruined by our weaknesses or shortcomings. The bible says “For the LORD disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives” (Hebrews 12:6, ESV).

The Holy Spirit always points to our sins and convicts us to repent, because God loves us and he does not want us to be ruined and eternally destroyed. Therefore, we should appreciate God’s love for us and the work of the Holy Spirit in us. We also need to appreciate the people who point out our weaknesses to us.
